Our guide to the far south west of France - "the real south west" covers the department of the Pyrenees-Atlantique, which comprises the fiercely independent Pays Basque and the Bearn, as well as parts of the Haut Pyrenees, the Gers, and the Landes.
The Bigorre is the French department known as Hautes Pyrénées, and consists of a rich, wooded plain and to the south, some of the most spectacular valleys of the Pyrénées.
North of the Pyrénées lies a long, high ridge where the towns of the Comminge overlook a wide plain leading to the mountains, giving the area its non-departmental name, the Comminge.
A fiercely independent area, the Pays Basque, where the Basque language is still spoken and the traditions followed as strongly as ever. The Pyrénées and the coast make it a favourite holiday area.
