The South West of France is full of sights for the curious visitor. There is, of course, the magnificent scenery. Once you get into the rolling foothills of the Pyrenees you will constantly be surprised by the hidden valleys that can suddenly show themselves as you go round another corner on that tiny road. Then there are the remnants of past civilisations, the Romans and before them early man. There are the reminders of the violent and bloody Dark Ages, and the glorious richness of the Church in bygone days when a pilgrimage to Santiago del Compostella was de riguer for the fervent Christian - or for a well-connected sinner.
