Towns - Medieval fortifications

Sauveterre-de-Béarn. Spectacular walled village overlooking the Gave d'Oloron
Fortifications
Fortifications of medieval town. The Tour de Monreal towers over the gave, next to the church which formed an essential part of the fortifications of the medieval town. Still largely unspoilt, you can enjoy guided visits of the bridge, tower and chateau. Open Days: 28 July; 14 and 15 September.
Condom. Known as the small capital of Armagnac
Larressingle - Very picturesque small fortified village. Known as the Carcassone of the Gers, this small fortified village has survived the turbulent centuries remarkably well. Its 270 metres of ramparts, which protected the bishops of Condom until the 16th century, are still largely intact.
Bayonne. Large city and port on the mouth of the Adour

Bastide, 17th Century.
Mauléon. Old capital of the Soule
Old castle. High on a hill overlooking the town lies the old castle of Mauléon, the Chateau du Malus-Leo or roughly speaking the bad lion; from where the old lords of the Soule surveyed their domaine. The walls are still largely intact and you can walk round the parapet. There is a small display on the prehistory and history of the area.
