The national park of Pyrenees Occidentales, was created in 1968 to protect the natural environment of the high Pyrenees, including the Brown Pyrenees Bear in severe risk of extinction.

The park snakes along the Spanish border from just south of Lescun in Béarn to the nature reserve at Neouvielle, on the southern slopes of the pic du Midi de Bigorre.

Included in the park are the Valley d'Aspe, the Valley d'Ossau, the pic du Midi d'Ossau (2884m) and the Grand Astazou (3071m). Two hiking trails, the HRP and the GR10, both pass through the park.

The towns below are useful bases from which to discover the park.
