Artouste is principally a centre for mountain activities. In the winter it is a ski resort, and the road further south to Spain via the Portelet Pass may well be shut.
The mountains in this area are riddled with tunnels, bored for all the hydro-electric plants, and the main attraction at Artouste in the summer is a tiny railway, left behind by the electricity contractors, which rattles along high up the side of an untouched valley, using some of the tunnels, to a reservoir.
Occasionally a shepherd will hitch a lift to his (or her) flock which cnm be found grazing precariously across the tracks.
