Originally a Roman outpost the town of Hasparren grew thanks to a thriving leather and shoe industry, fuelled by the now disappeared oak forests that surrounded it.
As well as working hard to maintain its industrial base it maintains a strong Basque heritage with pelote and the running of cows in the streets.
These caves were inhabited between 80,000 and 15,000 BC, and some ancient drawings can be seen. Open March 15 - November 15, closed Monday and Tuesday mornings in low season.
