The South West of France, next to the Spanish border has not been the easiest of places to get to for International travellers. Its charm is its rural nature, but the lack of very large cities means that most international travellers have had to change flights or hire cars to get there.
But things are changing. A number of low cost airlines such as flybe have started services from the UK to large and small French airports at remarkably cheap prices.
The nearest large airports with scheduled international flights by the main carriers are Bordeaux to the north, Toulouse to the East, (both served by flybe and to the south, the Spanish airport at Bilbao. Biarritz and Pau, both well served by French internal flights, now have international carriers serving them. Lourdes has charter international flights during the holiday season.
As yet there is no direct ferry service closer than the Spanish port of San Sebastian though rumours abound of future developments. The closest French ports with ferries are Caen, Cherbourg, Roscoff and St Malo, a day's drive away.
The TGV serves a number of stations in the area (though the très grande vitesse only starts north of Bordeaux.
