Brockenhurst is a big, pleasant village in the centre of the New Forest. On the northern outskirts are two of the loveliest of the New Forest Lawns: Butts Lawn and Balmer Lawn on which ponies roam. New Forest ponies belong to the Commoners, independant and tough people who own tiny plots of land on which their ponies, cattle, donkeys and geese wander freely over the heaths of the forest. To the west of the village is the amazing Rhinefield Ornamental Drive which was created in the mid 19th century. It includes a variety of coniferous trees and further on is Bolderwood Drive which passes close to the famous Knightwood Oak, probably the oldest tree in the New Forest.
